You start planning the name you will give your babe, the way you will tell your family and friends the happy news and you start making a list of everything you need to get done before the baby arrives.

Top on the list is things that you will need — the “essential products” that come with having a baby. I remember being so stressed as my due date came closer that I had to get everything ready, the perfect crib, the nursery, the toys — all had to be perfect.

Then the baby came, time passed and I had two more children and I realized just what I really needed and what products were a total waste of money. Yes, even many of the “essential” ones — looking back was just a waste of time, money and stress for products we didn’t actually need.

As my husband and I continue trying to conceive our fourth baby and plan all that we need to get ready — we’ve realized don’t need to get anything and we don’t even have any of these “essential” products.

Go Green, Baby! meets two needs in the community, according to owners and Naperville residents Heidi Bertino-Daum and Robert Daum. First, it offers a place for local parents and caregivers to buy eco-friendly gifts and essentials for babies and young children. Second, the store provides employment opportunities to adults with special needs.

“I devoted the past 12 years to working as a special education teacher in the Naperville school district,” Heidi says. “I was always inspired by the hard work and dedication of my students, who were determined to learn the skills they needed to be employed as adults. Unfortunately, when graduation day came, my students found too few meaningful, supportive employment opportunities.”

When the pair considered starting their own business, the chance to create good job opportunities for people with disabilities was the deciding factor. Also, as parents of two little girls, they have a personal commitment to eco-friendly and safe products.

“Everything at Go Green, Baby! is ecofriendly, organic and/or nontoxic,” Heidi says. “Although we primarily carry items for infants, we also have toys and games for children up to nine years of age, essentials for the no-throw-away lunch, bath and body products, and unique gift items such as jewelry, candles and picture frames.”

WFTX - Parents are always watching out for their toddlers’ safety, by blocking stairs and and locking cabinets. But now doctors say moms and dads may want to keep an eye on certain baby products, especially the ones their tots are able to put in their mouths.

According to a new study in this week’s issue of “Pediatrics”, from 1991 to 2010, more than 45,000 children under the age of three, were treated in emergency rooms in the U.S. for injuries caused by a bottles, sippy cups or pacifiers. That’s about one child every four hours.

The data, which was collected through a national survey on injuries, found 86% of the accidents happened when children fell while using one of the products, and 83% of those falls resulted in lacerations or contusions to the face and mouth.

Study authors also found that two-thirds of the injuries involved one-year olds, an age, pediatricians say, when little ones are still uneasy on their feet and are prone to topple over.

Because of the high number of injuries reported, study authors recommend toddlers not have these products in their mouths when they are walking, and that children only be given products designed for their age group.

Doctors also noted the best thing to do to avoid injuries, is to help children make a transition to a regular cup around the age of one.

Three and half months pregnant and struggling to squeeze into a corseted McQueen dress, fashion editor Pippa Vosper came to a realisation: while she might be pregnant — Pippa’s “lovely yet enormous” baby boy is due in September — she is unwilling to give up the designer creations that had served her diligently throughout a career in fashion in which she has played assistant to Claudia Schiffer and was resident stylist to American Vogue.

With this longing to remain in close contact with her beloved catwalk creations at the forefront of her mind, Vosper, now a fashion editor at style bible Harper’s Bazaar, dreamt up Maternally Chic — a blog which, she says, “is designed to show fashion-conscious women that expecting a baby need not mean giving up designer pieces”.

She adds: “When I discovered I was pregnant, I knew I would have to find a new way of wearing fashion, while remaining true to my style of body-con dresses and skinny leather trousers. In fact, I wanted all women to realise the same thing.”

Already a favourite with industry insiders and fashion voyeurs, Maternally Chic is, in essence, a photo-diary of Vosper’s dressing regime and includes daily updates showing Vosper adorned in clothes from every label imaginable — from Givenchy to Balenciaga and from Alaia to Christopher Kane.

Of course, not every pregnant woman has the access — or the budget — required to get their hands on the labels showcased on Maternally Chic but for Notting Hill- based Vosper, the blog is about more than just clothes with four-figure price tags. “I want to use my experience as a stylist to show women that it’s more than possible to dress as they did pre-pregnancy by making a few minor adjustments and balancing their new silhouette with stylish yet comfortable fabrics.” She is also constantly on the hunt for innovative baby products and beauty treatments, both of which she blogs about regularly.

But do pregnant fashion editors never have “bad bump days”? “Of course,” admits Vosper. “There have been occasions where I’ve had to admit defeat and place some of my most treasured dresses into storage. Attempting to zip up my Balenciaga at the four-month mark of pregnancy was nothing short of comical.”

A consumer alert for all parents: Baby products sold in stores today that some experts say are causing infants to die. TODAY National Investigative Correspondent Jeff Rossen goes undercover to find out more.

There’s a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saying more and more babies are suffocating while sleeping, and they’re warning parents to keep cribs empty. And that got us thinking about all those fluffy toys, blankets and bumpers you put in your baby’s crib. They look adorable in the store displays, but some experts say infants are dying from them — because companies and stores are putting profit over safety.

We went on a shopping spree undercover at some of the most popular baby stores in the country selling the must-haves for any new parent. “That bumper is nice and soft,” one salesperson said, indicating a crib accessory.

But for years, doctors warned soft products can be deadly in cribs for kids under 1. Babies can pull pillows and toys over their faces, cutting off air. Or roll into a crib bumper and suffocate against the side.

Yet the companies continue to make them, and stores continue to push them. “You want soft for your baby,” one salesperson told us.

Welcome to Rossen Reports: We want your ideas!

Soft and cuddly can cost you dearly. A baby boy named Preston was just 7 weeks old when he suffocated in his crib. The official cause of death: “The face being wedged a crib bumper and mattress.”

“I just sat on my knees, rocking back and forth with my child that was gone,” Preston’s mother, Laura Maxwell, said.

Preston’s parents thought the bumper would actually protect their baby because it was marketed that way, sold in baby stores nationwide: How could it be dangerous? They’re now suing the store and the manufacturer.

Rossen Reports: Is your child breathing radon at school?

The CDC say that in 2009 alone, 665 babies died from “accidental suffocation of strangulation while in bed.” Now the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a specific warning about crib bumpers — that they can be dangerous and parents should never use them. In Chicago, stores are now banned from selling bumpers, and Maryland may follow suit. Some doctors say that’s just not enough.

Dr. Eileen Tyrala, pediatrician and medical director of Cribs for Kids, said, “The manufacturers should stop making the bumpers, which really have no place in a baby’s crib and no place, therefore, ever.”

So we went straight to the group representing all those companies. “Doctors say they’re dangerous, yet these companies continue to make them and market them,” we said. “The question is: Why?”

“Parents need to make a decision for themselves what items they would like to use inside their crib,” Linda Woody of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association said. “And crib bumpers do prevent head injures and limb entrapment.”

“So you’re putting it all on the parents, basically? They’re not the experts.”

“Parents are truly the experts of their child,” Woody said.

“Actually, doctors and pediatricians are the experts,” we said. “And they’re the ones who say that these are unsafe.”

“I also think that parents in concert with their pediatricians and themselves, they know what’s best for their family,” Woody said.

But experts say it’s hard to know what’s best with the kind of confusing message you get at many stores. When we asked a clerk at Target who handled the baby section and claimed to have had all the training on cribs for crib bumper, no warning at all.

“So that’s good, to have a nice, soft thing to keep the baby safe?” we asked. “Even the newborns?”

“Especially the newborns.”

At Babies “R” Us, one clerk actually warned us about bumpers: “You shouldn’t use these anymore.” But then another clerk chimed in: Well, maybe they are OK for babies.

They are common items found in a household with a newborn child – baby bottles, pacifiers and sippy cups. Most small children interact with these products every day, but at what risk to their health?

Researchers out of the center for Biobehavioral Health and the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital analyzed the number of child injuries related to these kinds of children’s products. After examining data collected from a network of over 100 hospitals, they found that between 1991 and 2010, over 45,398 children under the age of three were sent to the emergency room with an injury related to one of these products.

In other words, that’s one child every four hours.

“My co-authors and I realized that there really hadn’t been any research on injuries related to these products even though the majority of kids in the country use them on a daily basis,” Dr. Sarah Keim, the study’s co-author and principal investigator in the Center for Biobehavioral Health at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, told FoxNews.com. “We wanted to fill that gap in scientific knowledge, because there have been reports in the literature of severe cases of children being burned by overheated bottles and choking on pacifier parts.”

According to Keim and her team, 71 percent of the injuries were to the mouth and about 20 percent were around the head, face or neck. The biggest culprit was found to be baby bottles, accounting for two-thirds of the injuries reported. Pacifiers were next, accounting for 20 percent and then sippy cups at 14 percent.

Since these statistics are only related to emergency room visits, Keim said it’s likely there are even more injuries that parents are treating themselves and not reporting.

“We think these injuries are likely occurring because children are walking or running with these products in their mouth,” said Keim. “Two-thirds of injuries were to children who were 1-year-old. That’s really the age when kids are starting to become mobile, so they’re pretty unsteady on their feet. This may explain why about 86 percent of the injuries were falls.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) already have existing recommendations for the use of these items, which the researchers believe parents should follow more closely.

“Children use a pacifier up to 6 months of age to reduce sudden infant death syndrome, but there’s a little bit of research that some children may get more ear infections when using a pacifier,” said Keim. “So parents may want to help children give up a pacifier after 6 months and when they start walking.”

Also, in an attempt to avoid mouth or dental injuries, Keim said parents should follow the AAPD guidelines, which suggest children should transition to adult, lidless cups when they are a year old She also noted it’s important that parents encourage their children to sit down when using these items to avoid falling and hurting themselves.

Keim and her team hope that their findings will help spread awareness and educate parents about the AAP and AAPD guidelines and hopefully prevent more kids from going to the hospital.

“I’m sure there are committees about recommendations for these products,” Keim said. “It’s too early to know whether it warrants a revision of these recommendations for any reason. The existing recommendations do pretty well already and may help prevent injury in the future.”
